Hiring is an art. It is a test of your judgement of people. A person may possess only some of the skills. They may be high on some and low on a few. You can assess their abilities after evaluating them in specific areas. Below are a few skills that I look for when hiring a designer.

  1. Systems Thinking: He/She has a clear understanding of the big picture and can easily visualise the smaller components that constitute the complexity.
  2. Empathy: He/She is a keen listener and observer. He/She has an empathetic understanding of people’s problems and a strong desire to help solve them.
  3. Advocacy: He/She speaks persuasively and argues for the well-being of the unheard.
  4. Collaboration: He/She effortlessly collaborates with others and is fun to work with.
  5. Personal Philosophy: He/She has intellectual depth and follows his/her own motivations or approach to work.
  6. Aesthetic Sensitivity: He/She has fine taste in arts and other crafts.
  7. Craftsmanship: He/She exhibits excellent workmanship in whatever he/she does and pays great attention to minute details.
